What is Trust

Hi everybody, it’s Pastor Dave at Word By Mail, coming to you on a Friday. It is our “Encountering The Father” day. If you have an Alone With God journal, open it to an “Encountering The Father” page. If you don’t have an Alone With God journal, you should check one out. Go to wordbymail.com. Get yourself an Alone With God journal so that you can follow us through these daily devotion guides.

Our “Encountering The Father” page is really the reflection page for the week. It’s the day that we encourage you to stop down and think back over the week and remind yourself what did God do for me this week. What did God do in me? Maybe even what did God do to me. So, on your “Encountering The Father” journal page, the first question is, “What did God reveal to me in our alone time together this week.”

And man, we’ve some great devotion guides this week. We had Take up Your Cross,” that was Mark 8:34. That’s the verse that says, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.” Great devotion guide there.

We also had a devotion guide called Living Water.” John 7:37, when Jesus stands up in the Temple and says, “If anyone is thirsty you may come to me and drink. Come to me if you’re thirsty, and out of your very being will come rivers of living water.” That was a great devotion too. You can find those devotions at wordbymail.com. You can go back and check those out.

We also did one called Love Letters this week. Daisy did that. Super, super good challenge about writing a love letter to God. And that was Hebrews 12:28. You can go back and read or listen to all of those devotions and remind yourself. Maybe just read them, just skim through them. Remind yourself what has God done in my life this week. How has he revealed himself to me?

Also, on the “Encountering The Father” page in your Alone With God journal, it says, “What scriptures is God highlighting in my life this week?” And maybe it’s the ones we’ve given you guides on. Maybe it’s your own.

And then, finally, it asks in your Alone With God journal, “How is he changing me?” What is God working on in your life this week?

I hope that you’ll do that. You can pause this guide right now and go back and do this because I want to talk to you about the weekend also.

So, first of all, spend a minute either journaling, which we really suggest or at least thinking, talking to God. Just spend a minute and think. “God, what have you done in my life this week?” And thank him for it.

So, tomorrow in your Alone With God journal, the page says, “What am I Grateful For This Week?” I want to talk a little bit about that, and Daisy’s going to come on and share with you a devotion, a response that she wrote in her “What am I Grateful For This Week?” page. That’s our Saturday page.

And then, Sunday is our “Sermon Notes” page. And so, if you go to church, take your journal. Make notes. If you’re not going to church, we’ve got a message for you in our verse-by-verse study of the Gospel of Mark. You can find that message at this link: Crowds vs Disciples. You can watch, listen, or read this message. You can watch it on Roku or Apple TV at the Word By Mail channel. That covers you for Sunday.

I’m just going to turn it over to Daisy. Let her talk a little about her “What am I Grateful For?” page, and then I’m going to come back and close for you.

Hey, y’all, it’s Daisy. Today, we are on the “What am I Grateful For?” page of our Alone With God journal. I am so thankful for this journal that I actually put this journal on my gratitude list this week. I’ve just had so many breakthroughs, and this journal has been such a vessel for understanding, and slowing down, and being able to connect with God in a new way. If you don’t have our Alone With God journal, now is the time to get it. And you can get one at wordbymail.com.

Let’s start with a verse that I picked out for us to meditate on today.

Palm 118:1-2 (CEB)
1 Give thanks to the Lord because he is good, because his faithful love lasts forever.
2 Let Israel say it: “God’s faithful love lasts forever!”

My question to you is, “What does trusting God look like in your life?” What does it look like to you to trust God wholeheartedly?

I don’t think that trusting God is about silencing our questions or shaming ourselves for having fears and emotions. I think that to trust God and to trust that he loves you and cares for you despite your fear, despite your inability to trust him, is faith. That takes faith to know that he’s big enough to handle that. Because God’s love is so big that he can handle your toughest questions, or your darkest fears, or your biggest doubts. And he can, and does, and will support you even when you feel hesitant to rely on him because that’s who he is.

What helps me to trust God is when I take intentional time to reflect and think about where he has shown up for me and how he has loved me through my toughest times. And I build sort of an altar of answered prayers. I write them down, and I give thanks for each memory of those answered prayers. So, I really encourage you to do the same today if you’re having a hard time trusting him.

Let’s pray. God help me to put my trust in you. Help me to know that I am never alone. Show me how much you love me. Show me your support and help me to remember the ways in which you have always shown up on my behalf. Thank you, Father. Thank you that you care. Thank you that you love me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Daisy, that is an awesome truth, and I pray that you guys would consider really what does trusting the Lord look like in your life. And maybe you even want to replay this guide and listen again to Daisy’s devotion for the “What am I Grateful For?” page. So, do that.
