Love Letters

Hey, y’all, it’s Daisy, and today we are on the “This Week” page of our Alone With God journal. This means that we are looking ahead and we are taking inventory of our lives, and we are asking God to strengthen us, and enlighten us, and set intentional goals for our focus this week because that is how God changes our lives. It’s really important to take some time and be intentional about the parts of your life that you want to pray over and what you want to focus on spiritually. And so, this journal really gives us a chance to do that. And if you don’t have the Alone With God journal, you can get one at wordbymail.com.

Let’s begin.

Hebrews 12:28 (NIV)
28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe,

Lately, I have started writing love letters to God. It is something I’m trying to do once a week, at least twice a month. It’s just something I’m doing purely out of love for God. I’m not asking him for anything. I’m not complaining about anything that might be going south right now. Instead, I’m just using it to express my love for God and tell him how excited I am to be on this journey with him and to see him transform my life.

These love letters have become a sacred place of celebration, awe, and hope. I even write them on beautiful stationery with my favorite gel pen. Then I put them in an envelope and put them away in a box. One day, I haven’t decided when, but one day, I will read them back and will see God’s work in my life. I will see everything that I’ve gone through through the lens of gratitude and love. I’m not pretending to not have hard days, but I’m intentionally turning my focus onto the goodness of God and seeing everything as good and seeing God as extraordinary. So, it’s just really about shifting my perspective and creating this space for goodness. It’s just about love and goodness. It’s something that’s been really magical.

And what this has done for my relationship with God is actually help me to feel closer to him in a really special and personal way. And I do get that from the daily devotionals. This is just something extra. It’s like my daily devotionals are a “date,” right? But my love letters are me reflecting on the goodness of the whole relationship. (That was a weird way to put that, but you know what I mean.)

But I feel like I am nurturing my love for him, and I’m staying committed to seeing the good that he’s doing in my life. And it really lifts my spirits.

So, with all that being said, today, I just encourage you to write a love letter to God. Do your devotional, but also write a love letter to God. Tell him what you’re excited for, and what you love about him, and how he’s changed your life in the same way you might write a letter to a spouse or to a good friend. So go and do that. Today, I just want to end this devotional with a prayer, but I am taking the prayer from Psalm 23.

Let’s pray together. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in the path of righteousness for his name’s sake. Although I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Amen.
