The Way, Truth, and Life
Hi everybody, it’s Pastor Dave. It is a Tuesday morning, and I am at my son’s house in North Carolina. We are going to do a “Daily Journal” guide today. So, if you have your Alone With God journal, grab it and turn it to a “Daily Journal” page. If you don’t, then grab something to write with and a journal. Open your Bibles to John Chapter 14. If you would like an Alone With God journal (and we really, really suggest it), get it at wordbymail.com.
Today, we are looking at John 14, verses 1-6. And we are going to go through the three major steps of meeting God. That’s Meditating on his Word, Applying his Word, and Responding to his Word. And then we’ll Pray to finish.
Listen, this is a critical moment in the life of Jesus. It’s the night of the Last Supper. It’s the night before the Cross. Jesus is preparing his Disciples to take the Word to the ends of the earth. And here’s what he tells them.
John 14:1-6 (NLT)
1 “Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. 2 There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.”
5 “No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.
If you want to stop and go over these verses again in your Bible, if you want to re-listen to it – do that. But then I’m going to read to you my actual journal page for this day.
We’re going to start with the Meditate section. I’ve got my journal here, John 14, verses 1-6. Here’s what I wrote for the Meditate section. Let’s just give you an example of what I do. You don’t have to do it this way, but it’s good for you to have an example. This is “What is God’s Word saying? What are the spiritual principles here?” That’s what the journal says.
Don’t let your heart be troubled. Don’t be fearful. Instead, trust in God. Heaven is real, and there is a place for me there. Jesus has prepared the place, and he IS the Way. And at the right time, Jesus will come for me so that I will always be with him where he is. And I know that he is the Way. I know that he exists as the Truth. And I know that he is the Author of Life.
So, that’s my Meditate section. You write your section. Really meditate on these words. Let them sink in. And write in your Alone With God journal, what is God’s Word actually saying here. Not – What do I think this means. None of that. Just write what it’s saying. What are the spiritual principles here? They’re simple, and they’re powerful. So, do that.
And then we are going to move to Apply. So, under Apply, your Alone With God journal says, “How does this apply to my life today, personally and specifically?” So we are at step two: Apply. Here’s what I wrote.
We don’t need to fear death. Or anything else in this world. The Lord is with us in this world, and we will be with him in glory for eternity. He has prepared the place, and he knows the time. How bad can this life be? It’s a vapor. So why or what should we fear? His work for our salvation is finished. His victory over sin and death and the grave on our behalf is won. He is with me every moment in this life, and I will be with him for every moment in eternity, in glory.
That’s how it applies to my life. That’s how I wrote – When the journal says, “How does this apply to my life today?” that’s what I wrote, right there. So, just to give you an example. So, now you take time, and you apply it. You write how does this apply personally and specifically to your life.
Next, is Respond. The journal says, “What action will I take in response to this truth?” So, here’s what I wrote. Again, just an example, just to give you a feel for what we’re trying to help you do with the Alone With God journal.
I wrote, I will not let my heart be troubled. I will trust in God, and I will rely on Jesus every moment of this life. He has a permanent place prepared for me. It is sure. It is guaranteed. I will trust. I will know that Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. I will know that everything is set. That Heaven is real. And Heaven is close. And Heaven is sure. And I am confident. And I am steadfast, and I am secure. So, who or what should I fear or be troubled about? The Lord’s with me every moment here, and I will be with him for every moment in eternity.
That’s my response. That’s how I respond to these verses. So, now you get your journal and write how will you respond to these most powerful verses.
And then, finally, I’m going to Pray. And again, I wrote my prayer here. That’s what I encourage you to do. Write your prayer. Here’s mine.
Lord, Jesus, please fill me with your Spirit that I may trust you completely. No troubled heart, no fear. You have finished it all. My eternal life is set, and my place is set. Thank you, Jesus for your secure assurance for both today and for eternity. For your glory, and in your mighty name I pray, Jesus, amen.
Amen, guys. Alright. That’s a quick little walk-through. That’s actually what I wrote on my journal page. So, if you’re going to do John 14, verses 1-6 today, then you write what God’s Word is saying, and what are the spiritual principles that are clear in these verses. And then, Apply it to your life, and Respond, and Pray through it. And you will have a real moment with God. That’s our goal. It’s to help you create that each day of the week.
