Wait in Silence
Wait in Silence
Psalm 62
Thanks for joining us for this devotion at MyDailyChurch.com. If you have a Bible, open it. Psalm 62 is where we’re going to start, and then we’ll do Mark Chapter 1 as well. So, if you can sit down with a Bible, please do. This is the goal of the devotional I’m about to share. And it’s really the goal of this ministry – to help you have a real, meaningful daily devotion with the Lord. That’s our prayer. That’s our hope. And so, we pray that you would be able to do that now. I’m using the ESV today.
Let’s pray, and we’ll jump right in.
Heavenly Father, would you speak to us about the drastic importance of this subject, Lord? Would you pierce our hearts with the importance of this subject today? In your name Jesus, amen.
The subject today is making a time, and a place, and an environment for you to be alone with God. That’s the goal. This concept of being alone with God is dear to our hearts. It’s what we always teach new believers, first, after basic salvation truths. We try to teach people how to get alone with God. It’s so important, and certainly, in the Book of Psalms, we can easily see that King David was transformed. He became who he was by being alone with God, making that time.
Psalm 62:1-2, 5-8 (ESV)
1 For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.
2 He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.
…
5 For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
7 On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
8 Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.
Psalm 62, Verse 1 says, 1 For God alone my soul waits in silence; And the silence part is really important because there are so many distractions and so many things get in our way. And so, we have got to force the silence. We’ve got to fight. It’s a warrior mentality. Get to a place where you can be quiet with God. Where you can (as verse 1 says), say, Lord for you alone my soul waits in silence. I’m going to be here, and I’m going to stay here, and I’m going to hear you through your Word and by your Spirit until you speak. At the end of verse 1, it says, …From him comes my salvation. From God comes my salvation.
And then verse 2 says, He only 2 He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken. (I shall not be greatly moved.) But listen, it’s in response to verse 1. It’s in the context of verse one. As our soul is waiting in silence for God alone, as we are committed to focusing on him, waiting patiently on him, then we come to know that he is our rock and our salvation. He’s our fortress, and we will not be greatly moved. We will not be greatly shaken because of developing this truth, this discipline of waiting silently on God alone.
Skip down to verse 5. It says 5 For God alone… second time. And listen, guys, God, the Holy Spirit doesn’t repeat stuff because he forgot he wrote it a couple of verses earlier. He repeats it because it’s important, and he wants us to know it. And so again, the Holy Spirit says, For God alone, O my soul. Wait in silence,… This is David commanding his soul to wait in silence. He says. O my soul, you better wait. You better wait in silence for God alone. Like, like David says, Oh my soul, bless the Lord. He’s commanding his soul to do what he knows he needs to do. Again, verse 5, 5 For God alone, O my soul, wait, wait in silence. Why? The end of verse 5 says, …for my hope is from him.
Again, verse 6, 6 He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. God alone is our rock and our salvation, our fortress, our strong tower, the rock where we won’t be shaken. But guys, if we never meet him in this way, then he can never be what he is in our lives. God is this. But for him to be this in our lives, we have a role, and that role is getting alone and waiting on him until we hear from him.
Verse 7 says, 7 On God, rest my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.
And then verse 8, 8 Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Over and over in Psalm 62, the Holy Spirit, through King David, says get alone with God. Wait silently for him. Wait in his Word and wait for his Spirit. Wait to sense his presence and to hear his voice through his Word and in accordance with his Word. This is the most important thing we can do. And guys, it’s the thing that Christians do the least. We do it the least because time is short, the days are short, and everything’s crushing in on us all the time. We’ve got to learn to take this time.
That’s my prayer for you today – that you would commit to make a silent place and then have a way, have a plan, to meet with God.
Let’s go to Mark Chapter 1, and let’s read really quick. I don’t want to go too long today – we could talk about this forever. Mark Chapter 1. It’s the beginning of the ministry; Jesus had just called his Disciples. He goes into the synagogue at Capernaum, and he heals the man that is possessed by the evil spirit, and he starts stirring up the Pharisees. And then he walks from the synagogue. And you need to go to Israel with us and walk from the synagogue in Capernaum to Simon Peter’s house, because it’s just forty yards or fifty years, it’s very close. He walked over there to Simon Peter’s house, and Simon’s mother-in-law is sick, and he heals his wife’s mother.
And then, in Mark 1:32 (ESV), it says, 32 That evening at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick and oppressed by demons. Verse 33 says, 33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door. And I don’t think that’s hyperbole. I think the whole city was gathered at the door. 34 And he healed many who were sick and cast out many demons, and he would not permit the demons to speak… It was like an all-night miracle healing session in front of Simon Peter’s house. And now the ball is rolling. The momentum, as we say, is gathering. It’s time to really catch this momentum, Jesus, and get your following together so we can build a multi-site megachurch. And the Disciples are really convinced this is it. It’s getting going.
And then in the very next verse, it says, 35 And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed (that’s Jesus) and went out to a desolate place… He found the place where he could be silent with God and wait on the Father, and commune with the Father.
Verse 36-37 says, 36 And Simon and those who were with him searched for him, 37 and they found him and said to him, “Everyone’s looking for you.” Don’t you know it has started? Everybody wants to see you. It’s time for you to make your mark and to become who you’re supposed to become. And the Disciples are frustrated, and they remain frustrated throughout the ministry time of Jesus because he would always go and be alone with the Father because he couldn’t do what he had to do unless he spent that time.
Let’s go to Luke Chapter 5. It’s really kind of in the same time period that we just read in Mark 1. Jesus is in Capernaum. It’s after he just called the first Disciples. He cleanses a leper. He’s preaching in the synagogues. It’s just the same kind of ball is rolling, momentum growing. Time and momentum.
Then look at Luke 5, verse 15. It says, 15 But now even more the report about him went abroad (He’s getting his famous building), and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities.
Verse 16, 16 But he would withdraw… He would slip away. He would disappear. He would withdraw to desolate places and pray. Guys, we need to do this. And listen, we have ways to help you do this. You can go to MyDailyChurch.com, click on the links for the Daily Devotion Journal, which helps teach you how to do this. And click on the Scripture by Topic List, which would also teach you how to do this.
And we’re actually writing our first book and workbook on this. Daisy Davis is just helping me write this. We’re putting together just a very cool workbook to help teach you about this. And Chapter 1 is about finished. So, if you want that, let me know at MyDailyChurch.com. I’ll send you Chapter 1. But you can get the whole six-part series titled “Alone With God” on WordByMail.com.
Let’s pray.
Lord Jesus, would you inspire us? Would you constrain us, Lord? Would you give us the strength, and the commitment, and the courage to say no to the things that are demanding of our time so that we could get alone with you, that we can spend alone time with you, that we can hear from you through your Living Word and by the power of your indwelling Holy Spirit? And Lord, would you inspire us to press into that place until we hear you speak? Until we hear your word come alive to us? Until we hear you speak to us? And then release us, Lord, to go on about our day, filled with your Spirit and directed by your Word. Please, Lord, draw us into a deeper relationship with you. In your precious name, Jesus, amen.
