You Are a Child of God

You Are a Child of God
Romans 8:14-17

In today’s devotion, we are looking at Romans 8:14-17. Our focus today is You Are a Child of God. Grab your Bible, a journal or notebook, and something to write with. Prepare your heart to meet with God as we look at this incredible truth today. Talk with God and ask him to speak to you today through his Word and by the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:14-17 (NLT)
14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.
15 So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own children. Now we call him, “Abba, Father.”
16 For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.
17 And since we are his children, we are his heirs. In fact, together with Christ we are heirs of God’s glory. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering.

Guys, you need to know today, you need to know right now, you need to go from this place knowing that if you have received Jesus Christ by faith as your Savior, made him your Lord, then the Bible says you are a child of God. And that you are led by the Spirit of God. You have not received a spirit that makes you some kind of a fearful slave. But you have received God’s Spirit when he adopted you as his own child. Which allows you to call the God of the Universe, “Abba, Father.” It means, “Daddy.” God of the Universe, you are my Dad. You’re my Father.

God’s Spirit joins with (your) spirit to affirm to you, to guarantee you, to assure you, that you are his child. Since (you are God’s child) you are his heir. Together with (Jesus) Christ, you will share God’s glory. But, if you are to (share God’s glory) with Jesus, then you must also share in his suffering.

Let’s pray together through these verses.

Heavenly Father, I thank you for drawing me to salvation.

(Listen, if you’re praying right now, and you haven’t asked Jesus to be your Savior, just do it now – right now, in this prayer. Just say – Lord Jesus, that’s what I need. I need you to be my Savior, and I receive you by faith right now into my life as Savior and Lord.)

And God, I know that when I do that, as I’ve done that that, your Word says I am your child. I become your child. And Lord, I’m being led by your Spirit.

Lord, I’ve not received a spirit of some kind of slave. Lord, I’m no longer a slave. I’m no longer a slave to sin, no longer a slave to this world, or to anything else. Instead, Lord, I’ve received your Spirit, Lord, when you adopted me as your own child. And Lord, it allows me to cry out to you “Abba, Father.” And I cry that out to you today, Lord.

And Lord, your Spirit is joining with my spirit, even today, to affirm, to guarantee, to confirm in my life that I am your child. And, Lord, because I am your child, I’m a joint-heir. You made me a joint heir with Jesus Christ, of your glory. And Lord, as much as I can understand and imagine, that, Lord, I know that one day with Jesus Christ I will share your glory. And so, Lord, I say that if I’m to share your glory with Jesus, then Lord, I embrace the fact that I must also share in his suffering, Lord. Because that glory that will be revealed to me and in me, Lord, is not worth even comparing to the suffering of this world, Lord.

And so, Lord, I trust you. I thank you. I thank you so much that I’m your child today, Lord. I thank you so much, Lord, that I’m being led by your Spirit. I thank you so much that I’m a joint heir with Christ, and I am moving through this life, Lord, until that day that I see you face-to-face when you call me home. And in eternity, Lord, I will share your glory with Christ. I thank you for these great and eternal truths, and I pray, Lord, that they would inspire me today, Holy Spirit, that you would bring them up in my heart and in my mind today, and that I would remember them often. Thank you for all you’ve done for me, Father, in making me your child. Thank you, Jesus, for dying in my place to make it possible. It’s in your name Jesus that I pray, amen.
