This can be a hard passage, and we'll see next week when Jesus finished it, many turned away from following him. But it's actually a super-critical passage for us to understand and apply to our lives. Jesus does not want you to live a life of spiritual emptiness, consumed by the world's offerings, because when this life is over, none of what the world has to offer will bring you eternal good.

One of the saddest things I have ever witnessed was in my early days of ministry when I was asked to sit with a man while he was being removed from life support. I was at his bedside, kneeling, and gave him the gospel message. He had tears streaming down his face when I was finished, so I thought, "This is good." The doctor came in and was preparing to remove him from life support, the respirator. His wife reached into her purse and brought out a can of Budweiser. Crack! The sound of her opening it rang off the walls, and the doctor was immediately concerned. "When you remove the respirator, I'm going to pour some beer in his mouth because that was his dying wish," she explained. The doctor told her in no uncertain terms that it would not happen. So instead, she placed his hands around the beer so he could hold it as he passed away.

Jesus Christ taught the "Bread of Life" discourse (message) so we would have something more than a can of beer to hold onto when our time to leave this world comes. We don't need the King of Beers; we need the King of kings! Amen?
