Be Still And Know
Today's focus is that famous verse, “Be still and know that I am God.” And if you feel like your world is shaking, if you feel like your foundations are crumbling and your oceans are roaring, then grab your Bible. If possible, just be still for a few minutes while we focus on being still and knowing that the God of Heaven is our God. And then maybe just say a quick prayer right now, and ask God to be with you, and to speak to you directly and specifically.
Psalm 46 (NLT)
1 God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.
2 So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea.
3 Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge!
4 A river brings joy to the city of our God, the sacred home of the Most High.
. . .
10 “Be still, and know that I am God! . . .”
11 The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress.
Man, that is awesome. All right. Let's go through it again. One verse at a time.
Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength. God is always ready to help in times of trouble. Guys, God is our refuge and strength, not our own thoughts, or our own plans, or our own devices, but God. God is our refuge and strength. Are we looking to him? Are we looking to him to be that for us today? Are we focused on who our God is right in the midst of our current situation? Are we consumed with the hundred different things we think we could do? And a hundred different ways out of this situation, we can think of? Guys, the God of the Universe is ready to help you right now in whatever difficulty you are facing today.
And so, verse 2 says, So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. We will not fear because God is our refuge and our strength. And because he is ready to help when our world starts shaking and when it seems like the foundations of our lives are crumbling into the sea. Our refuge and strength is God. And it is God who is in control of it all. And it may seem like our world is crumbling to us, but guys, our God is in control and our trust must be in him alone.
Verse three says with attitude, with renewed strength, and renewed determination, verse 3 says, Let the oceans roar and foam. Let the mountains tremble as the waters surge. Why? Why can we stare into the face of the oceans, roaring in the mountains, trembling in the waters, surging in our life?
Why? Because verse 4 says, A river brings joy to the city of our God, the sacred home of the Most High. Guys, the river of God brings joy to the place where God dwells. The river of God brings joy straight into our hearts, which is the sacred home of the Most High God. Your God lives within you. The river is often a picture of the Holy Spirit rushing over you, pouring over you, immersing you in the river of God. The river of God is the presence, and the power, and the joy of God engulfing you, even as it feels like your world is shaking and the foundations of your life are trembling. When you get still with God, he will send a river of joy, a river of peace, a river of strength to engulf you, to immerse you.
Psalm 46:10 says, Be still and know that I am God. Whatever you are feeling today, whatever you think you see, whatever you think is happening, your God, is still God. And we have got to stop being so fearful about what we think we see and about what our own nature is causing us to feel. And instead, we've got to be still in the midst of what seems like a great storm and a massive earthquake. We have got to quiet our hearts and our minds. And we have got to know that our God is still God. And our God is still in control.
And so, verse 11 says, The Lord of Heaven's Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress. The Lord of Heaven's Armies is here. He is with you. The God of Israel is your fortress. He is your Strong Tower. He is your Rock of Salvation. He is your Defender and your Strength. The Lord of Heaven's Armies is ready to help you. He is standing at the ready. But you have to access his refuge and his strength. You have to access his peace and his joy. The Lord of Heaven's Armies is ready with all that you could ever need and more.
But you first must be still. You must be still and know that he is God. You must be still and know that he is with you. And that he alone is your refuge and your strength. To be still, it means to “take your hands off.” Stop trying to fix things, to stop trying to do it your way. Be still and let your God be God and commit to allowing God to be your refuge and your strength. And commit to taking your hands off long enough to let God help you.
Be still and know that he is God, that he is here with you. That he is your fortress and that he is ready to help you. Be still and know that he is your God.
Would you just take a minute right now and respond to God? Just settle your heart and your mind for one minute and be still and know that God's Word is true and that God's Word can be true in your life in a very real and tangible way. And if you need to, ask God to be your God personally. Then humbly invite him into your life right now.
Respond to God in prayer right now.
Heavenly Father, you are our God, you are our refuge and our strength, and you are always ready to help in times of trouble. And you're ready today. And so, Lord, we will not fear when the foundations of our lives seem to be shaking and the mountains seem to be crumbling into the sea. Lord, we will stand in the face of the oceans roaring, and the mountains trembling, and the waters surging, and we will be still.
We will be still and allow your river, the river of your presence, to bring joy into our hearts. Lord, we commit together to be still and know that you are our God, that you, the Lord of Heaven's Armies are here. That you are with us, that you, the God of Israel, the God of your people, you are our Fortress. We pray, Lord, that you would make that real in our lives today. For your glory and in the mighty name of Jesus, we pray, amen.
As you go today, in the midst of whatever is going on in your life, at the very center of your heart today, may you be still and know that he is your God.
