Resurrection Sunday - Passion Week 1 Peter 1_4-5
Hi everybody, it’s Pastor Dave, and it is Resurrection Sunday! Praise the Lord! Hallelujah! And I hope you had a chance to celebrate the Resurrection today. If not, I pray that you would celebrate it now. We love Resurrection Day because our faith stands or falls on the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Resurrection is the thing. It’s the crescendo. It’s the foundation. It’s the pillar that our faith is built on. Guys, the Bible’s record of the Resurrection makes claims that are earth-shaking, that are world-changing, and that are certainly life-changing.
And so, I hope you take some time now, whether you’ve made it to a Resurrection service or not, to get out your Alone With God journal and turn it to your “Sermon Notes” page. That’s the Sunday page in your Alone With God journal. Let’s go through some scripture about Resurrection Sunday. If you don’t have an Alone With God journal, you should get one at wordbymail.com.
On this “Sermon Notes” page, there are just some simple sections. One for “Notes,” one for “Key Points and Key Verses,” and then “Prayer For the Coming Week,” hopefully coming out of how God speaks to you on Sunday. So, turn it there. I’m going to read through some scriptures about the Resurrection and just point out some pretty obvious things, and then I’m going to ask you to write in your sermon notes page and celebrate the Resurrection alone with God today.
Let’s pray to start. Heavenly Father, as we celebrate this incredible day, Lord Jesus, as we celebrate your Resurrection, we pray, Lord, that we would take a minute right now to get alone with you and to celebrate our new life because of our identification with you through faith of your resurrected life. Thank you, Jesus. In your name, we pray, amen.
So, guys, if Jesus didn’t rise from the dead, then he would have been just like the hundreds of other religious leaders who have come up with good ideas, or this or that, or ways to live – or whatever. But listen, Jesus Christ rose from the dead. It is proven historically. It’s proven in the supernatural miracles of God’s Word. It is not even a refuted fact. Jesus Christ rose from the dead. His Resurrection from the dead separates him from every other religious leader. And it proves that he has authority over, that he has power over life and death.
In Matthew 28:18 (write that down on your “Sermon Notes” page, maybe in the “Notes” section, maybe at the top of the page.) Verse 18 says, 18 Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.
Then, write John 10:17-18. I’m just going to give you some scriptures here for you to go back and read in a minute – to meditate on. In verses 17-18, Jesus says, 17 “The Father loves me because I sacrifice my life so I may take it back again. 18 No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. . . .That is an astounding, incredible statement by Jesus. And it is completely one hundred percent proven by the Resurrection. Jesus Christ laid his life down so that he could take it up again. So that he could be the First fruits of the Resurrection. So, he could be our Pioneer in the Resurrection. Go before us in it.
And guys, the Resurrection also proves that Jesus has complete authority over sin. Romans 6:23. Jot that down in your “Scripture” list on your “Sermon Notes” page in your journal. Verse 23 says, 23 For the wages (meaning the “just payment that is due”) of sin is death. . . But Jesus died without ever having sinned. He was sinless. And so, instead of his death being just payment for his sins, it was just payment for OUR sins in OUR place. Jesus paid the full penalty for OUR sin. And in the Resurrection, Jesus proved that his victory over sin and death and the grave by rising victoriously over them all. He conquered sin, death, and the grave by rising from the dead.
1 Corinthians 15 (this is the next to last verse I give you. Write it down in your “Sermon Notes” page.) verses 54-57, portions of that. You can read it all. I’ll read you portions. Verse 54 says that when we experience the Resurrection through faith in Jesus Christ, then, at that point, . . . this scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting? 56 For sin is the sting that results in death. 57 But Thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Guys, Jesus has complete victory and absolute authority over life and death, and over sin and the grave. And finally, Jesus IS our Resurrection. He IS our true life, our abundant life, our eternal life. In John 11:25 (write that down; it’s the last verse I’ll have you write down. Well, maybe one more after this.) Verse 25 Jesus said, 25 . . . “I am the resurrection (I EXIST AS) and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Because Jesus Christ exists as our Resurrection. He IS our true and eternal life. And we receive his Resurrection life by putting our full faith and trust in him as our Savior, receiving him as our personal Savior. Recognizing him as our Lord. That’s all it takes for us to receive the eternal Resurrection life that he died to give us.
And if you have done that or if you will do that today, then you can be assured of the promise in 1 Peter 1:4-5. (Write that down.) 4 and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. 5 And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, . . .
Guys, I hope you were able to make it to a Resurrection service today. But whether you were or not, I’d encourage you to read through these verses again, or listen to this journal guide again, and really meditate on the power and the authority that Jesus has through the Resurrection. And really thank him – really celebrate the eternal life that we have, the forgiveness of sin because Jesus paid the full penalty for our sin, and the priceless inheritance that we have that is kept in Heaven for us, pure and defiled beyond the reach of change and decay. And celebrate in the fact that through our faith in Jesus, God is protecting us by his power until we receive this salvation. Do that.
Use your “Sermon Notes” page. Read these verses. Meditate on them. And just write through your “Sermon Notes” page on this great Resurrection Sunday. God bless you all. I hope you have a great day today. And we will see you tomorrow, on Monday. God bless you. Bye-bye.
