This Week Passion Week - Triumphal Entry
Hi everybody, It’s Pastor Dave, here on a Monday morning of Passion Week. We have something really special for you this week. We are going to be doing devotions everyday of Passion Week, leading up to Good Friday and to Resurrection Sunday. We hope that you’ll join us every day. In order to get these devotions, if you haven’t already done it, text DEVO to (877) 790-9673. You’ll begin to receive these devotions by text every morning.
These devotions go with our Alone With God journal. If you don’t have an Alone With God journal, you can get one by downloading the Word By Mail phone app or at wordbymail.com. It is transforming lives. We’ve been using this approach for daily devotions to teach people how to get Alone With God for fifteen years. But since we’ve put this journal out, it is really, really changing lives.
This day, Monday, Day 1, in the journal is called “This Week.” It asks, What Are My Prayers This Week? And What is My Spiritual Focus? This page is meant to get you focused for the week on what your prayers are and what your spiritual focus should be. So, this week, our prayer is that you would be focused in both your prayer time and in your devotion time on Passion Week, on Good Friday, and Resurrection Sunday. And that is what we want to help you do.
Today we want to start with the Triumphal Entry, which was Palm Sunday (yesterday). So, our message yesterday was called “Your Savior is Here.” It was a powerful Palm Sunday message, and I really want to encourage you to watch it. You can watch it on the Word By Mail phone app or at wordbymail.com. I want to encourage you to watch that message and get your heart set for Passion Week, leading into Resurrection Sunday.
Today, let me read you the text that we taught yesterday, in that message. If you have your Bible, open it to Matthew 21. You can pause this video guide, grab your Bible, and get it to Matthew 21.
Matthew 21:1-11 (NLT)
1 As Jesus and the disciples approached Jerusalem, . . . They were coming to the Passover celebration, and this was the big one. This was the one that the True Passover Lamb, the Lamb of God that would be slain for the sin of the world, was approaching Jerusalem for the Passover celebration. And Jerusalem would swell to over a million people for Passover week. And so, all the pilgrims would be coming up the Jericho Road, and Jesus and his Disciples were coming with them.
1 . . . they came to the town of Bethphage on the Mount of Olives. . . This is the town just across from Bethany, where Jesus’ friends Mary, Martha, and Lazarus lived. So, if you want to find out what Lazarus’ role was in the Triumphal Entry, get our message from yesterday, and you’ll hear us discuss what Lazarus’ role was to get this crowd in a frenzy to announce the fact that your Savior is Here.
1 . . . Jesus sent two of them (Disciples) on ahead.
2 “Go into the village over there,”he said.“As soon as you enter it, you will see a donkey tied there, with its colt beside it. Untie them and bring them to me.
3 If anyone asks what you are doing, just say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will immediately let you take them.” Here’s why, all of a sudden, the colt of a donkey and its mother became crucial to the Triumphal event and to this announcement of your Savior coming into Jerusalem.
4 This took place to fulfill the prophecy that said,
5 “Tell the people of Jerusalem, ‘Look, your King is coming to you. He is humble, riding on a donkey—riding on a donkey’s colt.’” That is the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9. And it’s just one of many, many prophecies that Jesus fulfilled during Passion Week from Palm Sunday to Resurrection Sunday. It is incredible how much rational proof God gave you through his prophetic Word that Jesus, your Savior, is here and beginning the final week to pay for your sins. To provide you the righteousness of God. To be victorious on your behalf over death and the grave and give you eternal life in Heaven, in glory with him. So many prophecies were fulfilled in this week.
6 The two disciples did as Jesus commanded.
7 They brought the donkey and the colt to him and threw their garments over the colt, and he sat on it.
8 Most of the crowd spread their garments on the road ahead of him, and others cut branches (the Gospel of John says Palm branches) from the trees and spread them on the road. Guys, this was a traditional King’s entrance into a city after a victory of a great war. As a conquering King would come into a city, this is exactly what the people would do. But Jesus is coming into the city to be our Conqueror, to be the True Savior of Israel and of you and me, to one day rule Israel from the Throne of David for the Millennium. He will be King of kings and Lord of lords and rule from Jerusalem. But now, here, he’s coming as the King of our Salvation. He’s coming to bring your salvation, to complete your salvation.
9 Jesus was in the center of the procession (there were people all around him), and the people all around him were shouting, (Hosanna! Hosanna!) “Praise God (Hosanna! In the Hebrew – it means Save! or Save us now!) for the Son of David! (the Greater Son of David) Blessings on the one who comes in the name of the Lord! (This is a traditional prayer. Baruch Haba Shem Adonai! Blessings on the One who comes in the Name of the Lord) Praise God (Hosanna!) in highest heaven!” This is it. This is it. The victory that Jesus won over sin, and death, and the grave on your behalf. This is the beginning of the culmination week.
10 The entire city of Jerusalem was in an uproar as he entered. “Who is this?” they asked.
11 And the crowds replied, “It’s Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.”
Man! Guys, may our prayers and our spiritual focus be set on this first step of the final week of the victory that Jesus Christ won on our behalf over sin, and death, and the grave.
Pray with me, please. Lord, Jesus, thank you so much, Lord, for completing the work of salvation on our behalf. Thank you for this Passion Week that comes with so much celebration and Lord, so much solemn understanding of what it cost you on Good Friday to complete the work of salvation in our lives. And Lord, we pray this week, that our hearts would be focused on Passion Week, on Good Friday, and on Resurrection Sunday. As we move towards Resurrection weekend, we pray that you would hold our hearts. That our focus and our prayers would look towards the incredible work you did on our behalf on Good Friday and the incredible victory you won on our behalf on Resurrection Sunday. Thank you, Jesus, for this week. We pray it would be a great celebration for all of us. In your precious name, Jesus, and for your glory, amen.
