When The Walls Are Closing In

Psalm 56:1-4 (CEB) 1 God, have mercy on me because I’m being trampled. All day long the enemy oppresses me. 2 My attackers trample me all day long because I have so many enemies. Exalted one, 3 whenever I’m afraid, I put my trust in you— 4 in God, whose word I praise. I trust in God; I won’t be afraid. What can mere flesh do to me?

Sometimes, life can make us feel like we’re stuck between a rock and a hard place — stuck in a lion’s den, trapped in a fiery furnace, lost in a stormy sea, or nailed to a cross. David knew how it felt to be chased, attacked, and persecuted on all sides. But his hope was not in people or circumstances; his hope was in God.

I know that life can wear us down. I know how it feels to be hopelessly waiting for something, anything, to change. Jesus knows what it’s like, too. He came to experience earthly pain and suffering so that we would never be alone with ours.

Cry out to God in your weariness. Cling to Him and His promises. When you are weak, He is strong, and He cannot fail you. It is impossible for Him to be anything other than a good and gracious Father to His children. When you shine His love onto your life and trust in His promises, your strength will be renewed, and your fear will begin to fade.

Questions: Where in your life do you feel like you are waiting for change? How can you specifically trust God in that circumstance? Are you able to acknowledge God's goodness in the midst of your situation?

Prayer: God, help me to trust in you when I feel like the walls are closing in. Remind me that you are with me always — even until the end of time. Help me to rely on your strength and power as you calm my fears with your love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
